Palenque, Mexico

Over the years I have always been intrigued by the Mayan, and other ruins in Mexico. I have also been quite fortunate to be able to visit some.

The great ceremonial city of Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico sits on the side of a hill overlooking a vast plane. I’ve been on every one of the buildings in this photo. Needless to say, the reason I was there was for the natural history, especially the birds. I have so many photos and drawings from Palenque (all unscanned). Over the years I had many tours there showing clients the ruins, birds and other animals. Of all the ruins that I have visited Palenque is still my favorite.

Then about thirty years ago I was able to get Susan and Alexis to the ruins of El Tajin northwest of Tecolutla, Veracuz, Mexico. Over the years I have forgotten the culture that built the ruins, nut not the joy of getting these women there.

Other ruins that I visited in Mexico were Chichen Itza, Coba, Uxmal, Xpujil, Tulum (the only coastal Mayan ruins), and two sets of ruins in Oaxaca.

I do miss those days and the ruins, but not guiding. What insanity! I never that clients who spoke Spanish, so it was all up to me which I was OK with – most of the time. Oh well, thanks for indulging my visit to the past.
