We were traveling from Whitefish Point to Ann Arbor today. Typically, our travel days involve a small number of moths and sometimes butterflies that we see at rest areas along I-75. But today was different. We did have a very small number of moths but Susan finding a Five-lined skink was special.
I’m not sure that I have seen a five-lined skink in Michigan for many years. So, for me this was quite nice.
Five-lined skinks have blue tails. This makes finding them both challenging and easy. They typically hide under leaf litter and under wood or concrete steeps.
Here’s a series of photos as the skink emerged from its hiding place.

At this point I thought it was going back under the edge of the building.

Fortunately, it came out into the sun and relaxed.
