Bishop’s Bog orchids

We spent Saturday morning at Bishop’s Bog Preserve, in Portage, Michigan. It was a near perfect day. Normally I would have said that we were spot-on for seeing the orchids that we were searching for, but this year we were actually a week or two late for flowers. We were lucky though and saw a few.

There is a wonderful “floating” boardwalk through the bog. This allows you to easily see everything without wandering off and searching creating more paths.

Here are a couple of orange-fringed orchids on a bed of sphagnum.

Looking down on a rather nice specimen of this stunning orchid.

Side view of another specimen.

Last year around this time we had over 50 flower stems. This year were only had eight. That’s the difference that the heat made.

We also find a nice variety of other interesting plants here. This is spatulate sundew (Drosera intermedia). This is a delightful little carnivorous plant that has become more numerous over the years.

Tomorrow back to political cartoons.
