Back in Paradise

Settled into the cabin after a long day of travel to Whitefish Point. Not really a stressful drive, as it was a beautiful day that was warmer than had been predicted. I am always amazed at the variation in gas prices on our trips north. It was $3.69/gallon at the closest station to us in Ann Arbor. We got gas north of Flint for $3.29/gallon. Then topped off in Gaylord for $3.39/gallon. By the time we got to West Branch it was $3.89/gallon. In Paradise, which is the most expensive gas station in Michigan as far as I know it was $4.19/gallon.

When we are traveling I have a lot of time to sit and think about stuff. Which takes me to a graphic that I found on the Internet.

As my maternal ancestors are Italian I found this rather interesting. Especially so were the South American numbers. Argentina was a refuge for fasciasts leaving Europe (especially from Germany and Italy) after World War II. What was surprising was the 62%. I am sure that there is a connection to me involved with this.

Years ago Susan became the owner of her grandmother’s stamp collection. There were a lot of interesting things including postal history dating back to the 1890s. But an envelope that caught my attention was posted to her grandfather who was secretary of the American Cranberry Growers Association. The letter was from Argentina, which didn’t make it particularly interesting. However, the senders were of interest to me. The were the Bellotti brothers. I was shocked to see that we had a family connection that long pre-dated our meeting. My maternal grandfather was a Bellotti from Peschici, Italy. And after a lot of research I now know his connection to other members of the family. So, what a pleasant find. In the future I’ll post a photo of the cover.

That’s all for now.
