A southern Michigan bog

The other day we spent time at the Eddy Discovery Center bog trail. This is a wonderful trail that goes through a variety of woods and wetlands ending in a delightful bog. Along one stretch of the trail there are a lot of Indian pipes (Ghost pipes). which is an interesting plant.

But it was the bog that we were headed to. We had a nice variety of interesting plants including a number of orchids. We had Tuberous grass pink (on the left), Rose pogonia (no photo), Pink lady’s slipper (no longer in flower), Club-spur orchid (on the right) and the target orchid Eastern prairie white fringed orchid (in the center). This year we only found two of this rare orchid.

A better look o at the fringed orchid.

There were other other plants flowering and even butterflies (this is a Viceroy).

More later…
