With so many woodpeckers in Eastern North America how is it possible to haver a favorite bird. Pileated Woodpeckers are large, loud and flashy birds. Black-backed and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are rare and occasionally hard to find. Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are fun to find But for me it’s Red-headed Woodpeckers.

While exploring areas near Grayling, Michigan that had experienced a massive forest fire last summer we found several Red-heads. Surprisingly, one lead us to a nest.

The nest was is a burned pine (either a large jack pine or a red pine). The adult was obviously feeding young.

Head in to feed youngsters and bang – out of focus the bird was too fast.
