Susan and I celebrated my birthday earlier in June by walking downtown and shopping. We went to Sparrow Market, People’s Food Co-op and the Farmers Market.

Farmers Market is always fun. Getting excellent fresh veggies is an important part of our life. But sometimes I am surprised by some of the prices.

For instance garlic scapes. These are from our garden where we collected over 160. At the Farmers Market, Sparrow and the Co-op they were being sold for $5 for a bundle of 10. At this price our crop is worth $90. Then there is the garlic itself. We’ll have 145 garlic heads (the 15 largest will be used for fall planting). At $1 a head that’s a lot of money. Actually, I have come to the conclusion that garlic pays for everything that we plant. This year we currently have about 50 tomato plants, 12 basil plants, a newly purchased rosemary plant, about 8 kale plants 8 squash plant and 27 hot pepper plants, mostly jalapeños. When the garlic comes out our pole beans will go in. There’s the advantage of using a lot of garlic during the year.

With back packs full of veggies we headed into Found which is a fun place for me to shop, especially since it was my birthday.

Art supplies and journals are a highlight of being here. More on all of this sometime later in the year.

In the early evening we went back downtown. A fun aspect of weekends in Ann Arbor is that many of the streets are closed to car traffic. Outside of Connor O’Neil they had a large screen set up and everybody was watching a soccer game. Whenever we could hear the cheering we new something good happened for the team that everybody was rooting for.
Finally we went to Palio’s for dinner with Steve and Chellie. Steve and I have celebrated most of our birthdays together since we were 18. He’s about two hours older than I am. Sitting in class in high school we made this amazing discovery.
