Orchids in Mackinac County, Michigan

Yesterday we made our first real trip this year searching for orchids. We thought that the orchid season should be early this year – we weren’t disappointed.

The first orchids that we found were Striped coralroot. They weren’t quite blooming but were close. In another week or two they’ll be open.

Next we found the stunning little Calypso orchid, also called Fairy-slippers. These beauties are hardly over 4-5 inches tall and easy to miss, or step on if you’re not careful.

Then we headed over to a sight that has Heart-leaf twayblades. There are three evenly spaced across the center of this photo. They are no taller that the Calypso orchids that we found earlier in the day.

The delicate flowers are barely visible over the sphagnum layer below.

But with some effort you can find the perfect specimen.

Tomorrow, back to hawks.
