Day-31: Dauphin Island birds

Typically our days start at one of the many bird sanctuaries and preserves on the island. We’ve started at Audubon Sanctuary, Goart Tree Preserve and Shell Mound Preserve. Who knows where we’ll start next. Where ever it is there will be interesting things to see.

Nothing like starting the day with a cotton mouth (water moccasin). Interestingly, Cynthia the same woman who showed us the Burrowing Owl showed us this snake.

Not everything that flies is a bird. This is a dragonfly called the Carolina Saddlebags.

The past few days migrant warblers have been occurring in large numbers. It’s not difficult to see 3-4 Prothonotary Warblers in one bush. They are especially fond of the red-flowered bottlebrush trees.

A Common Yellowthroat taking a bath.

Louisiana Waterthrushes are everywhere, including one that snuck onto our screen porch.

It’s fun have Brown Thrashers singing at the same time as mockingbirds allowing you to hear the differences in their songs. These two weren’t singing but rather feeding in a small opening allowing us excellent views.

Hmm, what could this be? A bird turning it’s head just as I took the photo. They showing up two days ago and we’re seeing them in small numbers daily.

Yep, frustrating Worm-eating Warblers. This one ducking behind a palm frond just as I went to get the photo.

Oh well, you can’t always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need.

And it’s always nice to end the day with a nice sunset.

More later, when I’m not too busy with nature.
