Day-22: Diverse plants and animals

Our day started with another luna moth as the sun was rising. Then we headed over towards Sopchoppy, Florida in search of plants and animals.

An eastern fence lizard was a great start to a warm day in the field.

While we were watching the lizard a Red-headed Woodpecker crossed an opening near by.

Walking the Pine Flatwoods trail at Ochlockanee State Park, Florida we encountered a nice array of carnivorous plants. This is a dwarf sundew – the flower is as wide as the entire plant.

Continuing on to other sites I managed to find a pair of cyprus clubtails that were not disturbed by me.

Searching further afield we found a huge patch of Tracy’s sundew. This plant is quite different from all of the other sundews that we know in that it’s leaves do not lay flat on the ground, instead they reach upward. These all topped out at 8-10 inches.

Our final plant of interest was this bearded grass pink. An orchid closely resembling a tuberous grass pink which we find in Michigan.

that’s all for now, more later…
