Day-5: St. Augustine, Florida

I love getting into the south before the oaks have leafed out. There is so much mistletoe here. Everything that you see in this photo is “oak mistletoe.” It’s easy to see why the Druids considered mistletoe to be mystical in nature. When the entire tree is leafless the mistletoe is still green and leafy.

We are now in the land of Boat-tailed Grackles. The males are in full breeding mode.

We spent the afternoon at a small preserve north of St. Augustine that has great trails and boardwalks.

Christmas wreath lichen and one with a white wreath lichen next to it. For me this is a sign that I am in Florida.

We’re now seeing Eastern Phoebes, another sign that we are in the south.

While Turkey Vultures are still the dominant vulture species we’re starting to see more Black Vultures.

Two similar, but different palms. The one on th left is saw palmetto, the one on the right is sabal palm. We have also seen other palms.

Then at the end of the day we stopped at Aunt Kate’s. I can say that the mahi taco’s here are pretty darn good.

More tomorrow…
