Celebrating a special birthday

It was in 1985 that Susan and I first celebrated her birthday together. She had never been to the Bruce Peninsula in Canada, so that’s where we headed. We spent the night at Tobermory at the tip of the peninsula. What a fun memory. From there we spent birthdays mostly in Ann Arbor and at Whitefish Point, which is fine for both of us. In the past many of the restaurants in Ann Arbor had birthday specials with some taking half off the total check. Those days are gone but going out for dinner isn’t.

But dinner isn’t the only thing that’s she’s getting. There was a moth and caterpillar book that we saw at Cornell. The copy that I found on Amazon (of all places) arrived the other day . Since she has the Amazon account and the package came to her I decided to just give it to her a few days early so she could enjoy it – which she did.

Aside from the book, we went out to breakfast this morning.

Hmm, blue-and-gold gnomes and Ann Arbor and the rest of the world. Where could we be?

We were at Village Kitchen, the only restaurant that I know of with a flying snowman. The murals on the two west facing walls are views of Ann Arbor. This one is downtown.

After walking to Village Kitchen we then walked over the Wendy and Paul’s to drop off some books. We were both surprised when Paul spontaneously commented that he had been looking for the owlet caterpillar and moth book. He was shocked when he learned what I had paid for it, substantially less than he had seen it offered for (US$500+). I was glad that I had beat him to this copy, sorry for him, but glad for me.

After lunch we took Meg’s dog Kirby out for a walk. When we’re in town we take him for a mid-day walk whenever we can. Both he and Meg appreciate it.

Yes, Kirby wears his girly winter vest/jacket but still pees like a boy. Susan really enjoys helping Meg and likes Kirby, who gets quite excited when he sees us.

Finally, for dinner we took the bus downtown and went to dinner at The Earle. A wonderful way to end a great day.

More later…
