McMichael Gallery – part-3 Tom Thomson

If the Group of Seven were the stars of the McMichael Gallery, then the Tom Thomson exhibit was a super nova.

The title of the exhibit was North Star. It was truly “exceptional.”

This sums up the artist quite nicely.

This painting perfectly catches the image of a frosty morning in the north. What the gallery had to say about it is below.

Once again the fiery appearence of tamaracks in the later fall.

In the north sunsets can be overwhelmingly beautiful. At Whitefish Point we frequently have sunsets that resemble this.

The idea that Thomson got out and painted the aurora is mind boggling. Apparently he would quickly paint thenrun inside and warm up.

Autumn at its best.

This catches the nature of a jack pine perfectly. This winter/spring scene with the still smooth ice cover water and distant snow-covered hills is the north. This is possibly my favorite Thomson painting.

After all of the impressionistic paintings by Thomson and other members of the Group of Seven this painting of wildflowers by Thomson shows how he could pay attention to small detains, as well as the big picture. The moccasin flower, better know as a pink ladies slipper is common in the north, and occurs on our property.

Well, this was just a brief introduction to Tom Thomson. Please consider looking into learning more about him and his paintings.

Tomorrow – on to Ithaca.
