The last day of summer, 2023

We were visiting friends in Petosky and spend the afternoon at a nearby preserve where we wanted to see what we could find on the last day of summer, 2023.

Our walk through the woods, as we headed to the shore of Lake Michigan was dominated by fungi. This is a polypore that might be marshmallow polypore.

I really like puff-balls. The cream-colored one on the left is pear-shaped puffball. The one on the right is gem-studded puffball.

Finally, we found two different Hericium species. The one on the left is Bear’s-head fungus (Hericium americanum). The one on the right is Lion’s mane fungus (Hericium erinaceus). Both species are considered to be delicious by mushroom hunters. I prefer to just photograph them.

More tomorrow…
