The latest on viruses

The latest round of Covid-19 is hitting the world currently. We know of a number of friends that had covid in the past 3-4 weeks. They have been anywhere from sick to extremely sick. Right now you can get the latest Covid shot. We’ll be getting ours as soon as we are back in Ann Arbor and can schedule them.

Recently in India there has been an outbreak if Nipah virus. This is a virus carried by fruit bats. The good news is that it is not a respiratory virus, so to be infected you must come into contact with the virus, usually via tainted fruit, If you get the virus you cannot transmit it. The bad news is that it is really bad, frequently resulting in death.

Nipah virus was first reported in 1999. I can remember reading out it in the early 2000s when there were reports in Emerging Infectious Diseases, which is published by the CDC. When I was teaching genetics and evolution I regularly read this publication as it clearly showed both the role of genetics and evolution in the ever changing disease process. It also helped in understanding zoonotic diseases that jump between species.

The current outbreak is apparently due to fruit pastes and sauces from from fruit containing the virus. So, it you’re in India what what you eat.

More tomorrow…
