Our days always started with wonderful breakfasts. Our typical breakfast was at 5:30 AM. Then we headed out for birds.

Our first day took us to Yagul, a nature area with ruins.

Our driver dropped us off at the entrance to the site where we birded the road to where he parked. I would describe this habitat as thorn-scrub.

Finches and flycatchers dominated the birds. Blue Grosbeaks were quite easy to see well as were Great Kiskadees.

Ahead of us, down the road a Crested Caracara waqs keeping the road clean.

With a lot of effort and help from Eric we all had good looks at this Beautiful Hummingbird.

But you couldn’t just look at the tree or twig tops for birds. This Short-tailed Hawk was overhead.

A Vermilion Flycatcher and a Tropical Kingbird added to the growing list of birds.

I wasn’t just satisfied with seeing birds. I was often pacing in front of the group, besides the group and behind them scanning the plants along the road for insects. The beetle on the left is a reticulated new-winged beetle. The beetle on the right has no common name, but it is a Leptinotarsa undecimlineata, which is quite a mouthful for a little critter.

Scanning the edge of the road looking for birds.

A Boucard’s Wren posed for me nicely.

This Bridled Sparrow wqas not to be out-done.

My attention was quickly stolen by a pair of White-tailed Kites.
So much for the first part of our first day in Oaxaca.
Day-1, part-2 tomorrow.
