Moth night, round-1

This was the add in the on-line version of the Ann Arbor Observer. Well, because of power issues and the threat of rain in Ann Arbor, it was decided to postpone “Moth Night” until Saturday. However, as it was obviously a beautiful evening we decided to do it anyway. That was good because a couple from Saline showed up, and we all had a lot of fun.

Setting the lights up before people got there on the hill facing Huron River Drive. Then sitting at the lights facing South Pond.

The Moon looking south towards Arborland.

Several species of aquatic crambids dominated the moth scene. There beautiful moths have aquatic or semi-aquatic larvae. Since we were at South Pond it wasn’t a surprise having these in numbers. These were chestnut-marked pondweed moths.

A late addition to the moths was a green leuconycta. This was only the 2nd or 3rd time that either of us had seen one.

Sometimes I think that the lights serve as The No Tell Motel for beetles. These southern masked chafers were definitely taking advantage of the lights. The reddish-brown stag beetle, on the other hand was just there to peruse the scene. It was a monster, close to 2″ long.

More tomorrow when we have the results of round-2.
