The other day we went in search of Yellow-breasted Chats, which are rather uncommon in South-eastern Michigan in the summer.

Walking to the chat habitat we saw a lot of butterflies. There were a lot of European skippers. And I managed to find two Baltimores (more on that later).

We finally reached the chat habitat, a lot of wet shrubs with openings. While I could hear them, seeing them well enough to get photos wasn’t happening. Susan changed in further than I did.

I did manage a few photos. An Eastern Kingbird on the left and a singing Bobolink on the right.

Walking back towards the parking lot there were plenty of insect activity as it was getting hot. The small beetle is a “lightening bug” or “firefly.” The butterfly on the right is a Great spangled fritillary.

Back at the parking lot, I walked along a small wetland and found 100s of Baltimores. I like this photo since it shows both the upper wing and underwing.

On our way out of the park we were able to see close to 500 Pumpkinseed nests.
More later…
