Reading on a rainy day

For the past 2-3 days we have had cool weather, not topping 55F with a mostly steady rain. Even before that mosquitoes were at astronomical numbers, with few getting into the house. Tomorrow should be better, except for the mosquitoes, so we should be heading off in search of orchids and other plants (with gloves and head nets a must). But for the past two days I have been reading an interesting book that I got for my birthday.

When women were dragons – indeed the three f’s are correct. The story takes place in 1955 when there was a mass “dragoning” of women (when women morph into dragons). Between chapters about the main character, Alex Greene, there are chapters from a book on the history of dragoning going back to the dark ages.

The book is sometimes confusing, but ultimately clarified in later chapters. It is both happy and sad, touching and angering. And ultimately, in my opinion a tear jerker.

It’s not a dragon story like Game of Thrones,The dragon-riders of Pern, The Hobbit or other science fiction or fantasy stories. It is a story where dragons are just another species of humans. So, one might consider it a story about dead-end evolution since the dragons are all female and therefore cannot reproduce.

The book was published in 2022 and should be available from libraries. I’ve seen it at several bookstores. Yes, I do recommend reading it.

More later…
