Every year in early June we take a slow drive into Paradise. Over the 11 miles we count birds that we encounter. This year we had eleven species of warblers and 16 species of other birds, so it was a little slow. we did however have zillions of mosquitoes, but with head-nets and gloves we were able to deal with them. we ended our drive at Saw Mill Park in Paradise looking for spring wildflowers.

Blue-bead lilies are at peak.

Starflowers are probably a bit past peak.

Canada mayflower is also starting to reach peak, although these will last for months.

Pink lady’s-slippers were abundant.

They weren’t always in groups, sometimes single plants plants seemed to glow on the forest floor.

A large round-leaf orchid (Platanthera orbiculata) is sending up a flower bud. So I guess we should visit this site again, which is what we did last year.
