Back to Plants and insects

We spent much of the morning today in western Washtenaw County. This is a southern blue flag. We see a lot of blue flag in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but now see few southern blue flag since we usually miss the flowering season.

This is a big bur-reed on Embury Road.

Divided olethreutes moths were quite common on Embury Road.

An interesting sub-adult “bug” (really it’s a bug). This was also on Embury Road.

Band-winged crane fly that landed on our car just before we left Embury Road.

One of the reasons we went to Embury Road was for “southern” birds that we never see in northern Michigan. We managed to find – Blue-winged Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Acadian Flycatcher and Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

We headed over to Eddy Discovery Center to look for orchids in the bog. We found a few round-leaf sundew, purple pitcher plants and sedges.

This is green-keeled cottongrass also in the bog.

This is Arethusa bulbosa, dragon’s-mouth one of our targets. With how dry things are we only found 9 blossoms. We also found a few pink lady’s-slippers.

A final piece of nature – witch-hazel cone gall aphid .

More tomorrow…
