Memorial Day 2023

This is a photo that I took of my father, Edward Kielb in 1975. He was my hero. He patiently introduced me to stamp collecting in the 1950s. Coached me playing baseball. Supported me in school. He came to book reading that I did. And was just an all around nice person. You’d never have known what he went through in World War II.

Here’s my father in the South Pacific in 1942, as a member of the United States Marine Corps.

Here’s a map of his travels during World War II.

The Navy Unit Commendation for the battle of Eniwetok.

The Navy Unit Commendation for the battle of Guam.

After Guam he spent the next two years in military hospitals. He had contracted dengue fever and was quite ill. When he arrived in the US he was down to 118 pounds, which is not a healthy weight for somebody who was 6’2″. But he survived, married my mother and is the result that I am here and writing today.

  1. Ya know, Professor, when you first shared to me your Dad is a Marine, I was so filled with pride. How cool is it to have the best educator a result of a hero! May he be at peace…
