Cold May morning in Nichols Arboretum

We went to Nichols Arboretum this morning hoping for some spring migrants, of which there were very few. There were however some nice plants in bloom, like this swamp buttercup.

We also found a number of jack-in-the -pulpit, which is always nice.

There were also a lot of rue anemone. This was a particularly dense cluster.

There were quite a few yellow trout-lilies. We didn’t see any of the white ones.

Trillium were somewhat abundant.

While we saw a lot of wild ginger plants we didn’t see a lot of flowers, so this one was a pleasant surprise.

Violets were scattered throughout the Arb.

Finding mitrewort (bishop’s cap) in School Girl’s Glen was a pleasant surprise. I don’t every remember find it there, then I have only been going there since 1977.

And finally prairie trillium along the edge of Dow Prairie. This is a stunning little plant.

More tomorrow…
