Bad new from the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory

Well, it appears that the three things that appeal most to visitors to Whitefish Point won’t happen this year. For the first time since 1979 there is no hawk counter. Here is the statement posted on the WPBO website-

So, no hawk counter at one of the premier spring hawk-watching sites in North America. The Owl’s Roost is now closed, apparently permanently. This is really bad for WPBO since people, many of whom are not bird-watchers are looking for a place to shop at the point. This will undoubtedly benefit the Shipwreck Museum gift shop. The Owl’s Roost has not been open since 2020, when the pandemic started. I have talked to so many people at the site in 2021-2022 about where is the “Observatory?” At least for the casual visitor I could send them to the hawk deck where they might see a hawk or eagle and chat with the hawk-watcher. Now I will tell them that there is no gift shop and that the “Observatory” has no public presence.

As with 2020-2022 there will also be no Spring Fling. This was always a spring highlight for many people in the Great Lakes where they could see old friends, learn something about birds and hear a good speaker.

At least there will still be a waterfowl counter.

So much for the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory.

It’s always fun finding a new place to eat in Ann Arbor. This morning Susan and I walked downtown to shop at Sparrow Market and The People’s Food Co-op. On the way home we found Bao Space on North Main just in time for lunch.

Their pork bao are excellent, as were the pickled cabbage-pork dumplings. Their springs rolls didn’t rate very high but were still OK.

More later…
