We spent two days exploring this site in South Carolina. We could have easily spent a lot more time here, but it’s time to head off to Florida.

There were a lot of little birds all over the place. White-throated Sparrows and Chipping Sparrows were especially abundant. So were Pine Warblers, even in the parking lot.

Somehow a reddish theme seemed appropriate for the parking lot at the boat launch. This Brown Thrasher serenaded us for quite a while. Even the Carolina Wren seemed to be enjoying the singing.

A good-sized puddle in the parking lot showed the tremendous build-up of pine pollen that covered everything, including our clothes when we got home.

Eastern Towhees were delightfully common, sometimes occurring in groups of 4-5.

One small flock of Cedar Waxwings have been the only ones for our trip south so far.

Turkey Vultures have been seen every day, and will continue to be for our time in the south.

Osprey have become more common now that we are close to the coast.
Then there’s food!

Well, not what we expected to find in Orangeburg, but we were quite happy with this discovery. Oxtails, chicken curry, rice, beans, corn, green beans, collards and fried plantains. We were able to eat for two days with our rather large order. I highly recommend getting food here if you are in southern South Carolina – it will be worth it.
More tomorrow…
