Catching up for the week, again

I guess that it snowed in Ann Arbor. After being in the north for over a week it was a nice surprise to get home and find snow, especially since our young neighbor Jackson had shoveled everything. Now, back to the north.

One of the highlights of our cabin at Whitefish Point is definitely the wood stove. I’ll make 5-6 trips a day down to the garage to gather more wood, but it’s exercise that I appreciate.

The winds at the point blow sand particles across the snow where particles drop out depending on size, weight and density. The almost black lines are com posed of particles high in iron. The browner bands are made up mostly of silica. The patterns can be stunning.

Walking along the road you notice interesting things in trees. The “clump” in this white spruce is a witches broom which is how the tree responds to dwarf mistletoe. I have a fondness for mistletoe as I seek it out where ever we travel.

These are the cones of balsalm fir, many of which have been striped up scales as birds seek out the seeds.

Balsalm fir is easy to spot along a road as the trees form tall straight spires that are much less “bushy” than white spruce growing nearby.

Oh-oh, birdwatchers have to be weary of owls attacking them, or…

Or it’s just an interesting sign for a spot to look for birds.

After leaving the cabin we headed down to Petosky.

It was fun checking out The Grain Train, a co-op that would be a great place to shop.

I really liked the butterfly which was in an alley in downtown Petosky. I also like The Katydid, even if I didn’t go in to look around.

Next time we are here we are definitely getting pierogi here. Now, some humor to end the day.

This appeals to my inner entomologist, who by the way always has pinning supplies nearby.
