It’s that time of year – the Christmas Bird Count season (CBC). This year we will be doing two. The Ann Arbor CBC on 17 December and the Whitefish Point CBC on 27 December. This should be a lot of fun, especially since we have not done a CBC since before 2019.

We’re expecting a lot of birds on the Ann Arbor CBC. Cardinals, House Finches and Woodpeckers should be easily found.

American Goldfinches should also be common.

Since we’ve been seeing and hearing Eastern Bluebirds where ever we walk we’re expecting them on count day.

Bald Eagles and Hairy Woodpeckers (Downy Woodpeckers too) should be on both counts.

Black-capped Chickadees should be abundant on both counts.

We’re hoping for Northern Shrike on the WP CBC and should see Ruffed Grouse.

A treat would be finding a Spruce Grouse, which occur at Whitefish Point.

Another expected bird would be Bohemian Waxwing. Since the berry crop is huge in the Whitefish Point area we “should” find these.
I’ll probably post on the two CBCs the day after they are done.
More tomorrow…
