Whitefish Point Birds and the human population

An American Goldfinch on a branch with nearby lichens.

A male Pine Grosbeak on our deck this morning.

Lots of Common Redpolls to watch today. Photographing them required some patience. But the next bird was a pleasant surprise.

The un-streaked under-tail coverts and the overall white coloration of this bird makes it a Hoary Redpoll. But it wasn’t the bird of the day.

This was the second of two Boreal Chickadees that we located today. Both times it was by hearing them first.

The November sun setting in the west. Now on to the human population.

Earlier this week the human population topped 8 billion. When I consider that the human population when I was born was about 2.5 billion that puts it in perspective for me. The percentage of humans younger than me is over 81%, accounting for those who have died that were older than me it’s probably closer to 90%.

Laurie Anderson put the population situation in words years ago stating “Now that the living outnumber the dead.” Think about it.
