In 1775 the U.S. Marines were formed

My father was proud to have served in the USMC during World War II. He’s #8 at the tail of the pack howitzer. I’m not sure where this photo was taken, but do know that it was in the South Pacific, possibly Guam. My father, squatted down low at the tail of the gun because he was so skinny. He was possibly already suffering from dengue fever which was why he was sent back to the U.S. Regardless, before this he saw serious action as can be seem from the citations below.

My father was a member of the 22nd Marines, Second Separate Pack Howitzer Company. The howitzers would be disassembled by the crew of eight and moved to the next firing point. They were highly mobile on rough terrain.

This citation was given to the First Provisional Marine Brigade for action on Guam. My father was a member of the 22nd Marines, Reinforced.

The bonds that he formed with the members of his crew and other marines resulted in life-long friendships. I can remember former marines visiting, sometimes for meals, sometimes staying for days or a week.

More tomorrow…
