A night with moths

First – yesterday the Charles Schulz Peanuts stamps came out. They cover first class letters. Now on to A night with moths.

Susan was asked to do an evening presentation about moths at the NAP (Natural Areas Preservation) office in Ann Arbor. We started setting up sheets around 7PM.

It took about 15-20 minutes to set up each sheet, each about 100 yards apart. This one faced the small creek east of the NAP offices..

The final sheet set up just before dark, facing South Pond.

People started arrived before dark, while we were still setting up. Most of them brought folding chairs and flashlights.

Here’s Matt and Juliet getting a list of people who were attending, just before we talked to them about moths and other insects that “might” show up at the sheets. Warning them that a cool evening in late September was iffy for most.

Insects, mostly moths and midges started showing up at the sheets.

People used iPhones and cameras to take photos of moths as Susan and I identified them. We rotated between the three sheets trying to make sure we were at different sheets so we could help people.

Here’s Susan talking to Barbara about moths as she filmed what was happening.

Before the evening was done the Moon graced us with its presence.

More tomorrow…
