The other day Susan made sausage-kale soup, while I picked more blueberries, this time I managed three cups. I’m seeing more blueberry pancakes in my future.

Outside the lichens were glowing in the early morning light. This is a stump along the driveway that had no lichens ten years ago. Now it has a thick mat covering the top.

A walk to the point allowed us to find more caterpillars and even some eggs. Don’t know what either of these are.

This large caterpillar is a Canadian tiger swallowtail. It’s just starting to spin a cocoon where it will spend the winter.

This is an ant tending an alder woolly aphid. The aphids produce a sweet nectar that the ant drink. Thus they are “aphid herders,” protecting them from predators. It’s a good deal for both species.
