My day started reaching the Michigan Audubon newsletter which included the above report about Piping Plovers. What a great way to start the day.

We spent part of the day visiting the new Helstrom Nature Preserve. It’s an interesting place, but lacks any trails. Therefore you have to bushwhack you own path from Whitefish Point Road to Whitefish Bay. This is not for the meek. Our reward was stumbling on a large patch of easy to pick blueberries.

This is the Shelldrake River at Whitefish Point Road. It’s quite nice. This is where the bridge crosses the river. Anybody who has gone to Whitefish Point has passed this many times. In the past the small community of Shelldrake was located just north of here.

This is the view of the river from close to where it enters Whitefish Bay.
I can imagine that in the spring it might be an excellent site for finding migrant birds.
More tomorrow…
