Started the day with a few moths. Jack pine budworm is obviously a pest of jack pines, which surround us at Whitefish Point. The green-colored wavy-lined emerald is less of a pest, and more uncommon.

Here’s a white eulithis on the left and Formosa looper on the right. Both are as common as the emerald. After checking out the moths we headed over to a fen in Mackinac County in search of uncommon moths and plants. This is a site we have never visited before.

On the south side of Paradise I would have never expected seeing helmeted guinea fowl. But there were four feeding on the side of the road.

We finally got to the marly fen where Susan wanted to look for some rare fen-dwelling moths. I wanted those and the unusual plants that can be found in fens.

A small hemipteran that I have not identified yet.

A Confused haploa, Haploa confusa.

There were lots of horned bladderworts in the areas with standing water. There were also pitcher plants and sundews. A nice batch of carnivorous plants.
More tomorrow when we venture into another fen that is known for it’s orchids.
