The day started with us losing power during high winds after a storm passed through the area. So, not much happening for us today. As a result I started looking at plants and animals that I had photographed on this day in past years. The above photo is a Bog copper. We’ll be headed out to look for these in a few days.

Club-spur orchid, hooded lady’s-tresses and spotted coralroot should all be found on the same trip when we are looking for the bog copper.

Common bladderwort is common at the same site.

Horned bladderwort is abundant there.

We usually find Nyphula moths searching for various aquatic plants. These have an aquatic caterpillar.

Purple-lined sallow caterpillar. Found completely by accident.

Swamp candles is always a fun plant to find.

Round-leaf sundew are so abundant that it is hard not stepping on them. Now, on to a lucky sighting.

While leading the “Botany, bugs and beasts” trip for Michigan Audubon years ago we were lucky to encounter two pine martins high in a spruce.

They stayed put until we moved on. I imagine that they felt safe being some 25 feet above up. Not often that you get to see, let alone photograph the amazing little predators.
More tomorrow…
