It’s all happening at the zoo

Today we spent close to seven hours at the Detroit Zoo.

We started with the penguins which Oscar and Camilla both liked.

In the butterfly house we saw a lot of Central American tropical butterflies. I just included a few of my favorites.

Two of the larger butterflies that we saw. The Morpho (the blue one on the right) was low enough for the kids to get good looks.

A lst butterfly, then we went through the aviary and proceeded to a spot for a snack.

The whole crew, minus me taking a snack break before heading to the fountain, the amphibian exhibits and the reptile exhibits.

Oscar was really excited to see both the emerald python (on the left) and the emerald boa (on the right). I was amazed how much he knew about some many of the animals. He really remembers details quite well.

This huge monitor lizard swam up to the glass in front of Camilla and Oscar giving them both excellent looks at this huge lizard (probably close to seven feet).

Much of the rest of the day was spent with interesting mammals, like this red panda.

Dromedaries were the first of the mammals that the kids thought were “cool.”

I’ve always liked the striping pattern in zebras.

The great apes were fun for all of us to watch. We saw the polar bears, sloths and fruit bats.

walking through the Australian exhibit was fun because you are actually in the kangaroos and wallabies. They kept their distance from people on the path.

After we were done we took the train back to the entrance. The kids got to get a stuffed animal each and it was time to go home.

Later this week I’ll post about Dinosauria an amazing dinosaur exhibit and a special photo with Camilla and Oscar. But this is enough for tonight.

More tomorrow…
