Plants and insects heading south to Ann Arbor

The day started with wonderful looks at a Green marvel before we started south.

We stopped just north of Tahqua Trail where we know there are some Purple fringed orchids and were not disappointed. There were over 60 plants, most in full blood.

Among the 60+ plants, many were completely normal, like the one on the left. But there was a single plant where the flowers were white, which is quite exciting.

To give you an idea of the size of the plants, here’s Susan photographing the white one.

From there we made out way to King’s in Moran for lunch then on to the St. Ignace rest area where we found some interesting insects including this White furcula, an attractive little moth.

Perhaps the most interesting insect there was this large Neuropteran, which might be a female dobsonfly, but Seek is calling it a Summer fishfly.

I=Our most exciting find here was The Herald (yes “The” is part of the name). This is only the second site that we have even found this stunning moth.

Before crossing the Mackinac Bridge we stopped to look for plants in St. Ignace. Then it was the drive through the lower peninsula, only stopping for gas and to change drivers.

Speaking of gas, if you are traveling near Gaylord get gas at the south Gaylord exit (mile 278). $4.07 a gallon is the cheapest that we have seen in some time.

More tomorrow…
