Spending time in the garden

For weeks now we have been using mint from the garden for cooking and salads. But now the is so much mint that we have started drying it. We have left some that has started to flower because of the pollinating insects that are attracted to them.

The dill has also started to flower. I cut many of the plants back, collecting the leaves for drying. Some, like this one were left to go to seed, which we will collect and save for planting next year, even though many seeds will scatter on their own.

The basil plants are starting to bush out. I’ve nipped back all of the flowers and collected some leaves for salads and cooking. Much of the rest will become pesto later.

We’ve been eating kale for weeks now, and the plants are really starting to grow with the summer heat.

Many of the tomato plants have started to produce fruit. Hopefully some will be ripe when Alexis and the kids arrive in two weeks.

The big haul right now is garlic. There are around 100 large heads, which have started the drying process. This will provide some for planting int the fall and prevent us from buying garlic until next early summer. Who knows, we still have some from last year.

More tomorrow…
