Last year versus today

On 18 June 2021 I photographed this Mississippi Kite at Cherry Hill Nature Preserve. Interestingly, in 2015 I saw one at Whitefish Point. Strange coincidence.

Last June we were following the emergence of 17-year cicadas. I even bought a can of Brewed X coffee, which was a fun way to celebrate the event. Susan and I were married in a 17-year cicada emergence. This was our third together.

We spent the morning today at Sharonville State Game Area. Grasslands are quite different from our typical wetland visits. But this is where we could fine some birds that we hadn’t see yet this year.

Henslow’s Sparrows were one of our target species. You have got to be lucky to see them sitting atop a small shrub when they sing.

Another species of note here is Dickcissel. As with the sparrow you have to get lucky finding them perched where you can see them

Sometimes you just have to be lucky to catch them both singing in the course of the morning.

We ended our day walking to El Harissa our local North African market to get gelato. Susan got pistachio and I got roast hazelnut – fig. They were both excellent.

More tomorrow…
