Monkeypox and more

Since it first appear outside of Africa, a few weeks ago monkeypox has continued to spread. Monkeypox is a member of the orthopoxvirus genus of viruses. This also includes Variola virus (smallpox virus) and cowpox virus.

Currently these are states with cases of monkeypox.

Here are the number of cases, by state as of 6 June 2022.

Now, on to hyperekplexia, neither an epidemic or pandemic problem. Rather, it is exceeding rare, with less than 300 new adult onset cases annually in the U.S. This neurological disorder is due to a missing neurotransmitter pathway, specifically glycine. The disease is due to one of four known genetic errors. Additionally, it is the disease that I have.

A common name for the disease is familial startle disease. A serious startle can cause somebody with this disease to experience a seizure-like collapse. It can be scary to people who observe this. Surprisingly, it is rather calming, after the pain of the startle.

Currently, I am one and a half years since my last episode, for unknown reasons. Hopefully this will continue forever. Regardless, I am quite please at the moment.

More tomorrow…
