A walk on a warm Sunday

We spent a long morning at the Eddy Discovery Center in western Washtenaw County today. There were a lot of birds singing, notably Black-billed Cuckoo, Acadian Flycatchers and waterthrushes. But we we weren’t especially looking for birds. We were looking for orchids and other bog plants.

Bog bean was in bloom at the bog at Eddy. It is a stunning little plant.

One of the orchids that we found was pink ladies slippers. we usually get here too late for them to be in bloom. That wasn’t the case this year.

The main target was Dragon’s mouth (Arethusa bulbosa), and we weren’t disappointed. We found several dozen in the small bog here.

Here’s Susan calf-deep in water in the bog.

Another plant in the bog was a “bladderwort.” Not quite sure of the species, but we’ll work on it.

Dragonflies here are always interesting. This is a member of the genus Aeshna. We also had Ebony jewelwing, whitetail and orange bluet.

This millipede was over 60mm in length, making its way up a tree.

I believe that this is an assassin bug. I know it, but will still have to look up which species it is.

More tomorrow…
