Heading north to Kirtland’s Warbler country

Leaving the heat for the cooler north. We’re heading to Whitefish Point, but will be stopping south of Grayling to try to find some Kirtland’s Warblers.

Of course, along I-75 the orange barrels and arrows have popped up like mushrooms after a rain.

But we finally got to our destination after lunch in Roscommon. It was quite windy but managed to hear four males singing.

Here’s a photo os a singing male about 100 yards from where we stopped this year. I’m sure that in a couple of weeks it will be prime for seeing Michigan’s special bird.

Another highlight of this site is birds-foot violet, which is a delightful little plant.

By the time we got to Whitefish Point it was obvious that spring was trailing southern Michigan. Here the maples were flowering without and leaves visible yet.

More tomorrow…
