A May bird count without photos

Today was the Washtenaw County May Count. My friend Roger picked me up before 5AM to head down to Saline Township to listen for owls and rails. Well, by 3PM we were finally done as the temperature hit 85F and a cold front (thunderstorm with hail) was heading our way.

The good news was that we had found some 75 species of birds, including Virginia Rail and Sora. The bad news was that we didn’t her an owl.

One of the high points of the day was looking for birds at the trails along the saline River behind Saline Mills. We were fortunate to see three Red-headed Woodpeckers in one sycamore. Even better was hearing and ultimately seeing a Yellow-throated Warbler.

Two views from Saline Mills/. I preferred the view of the river with lots of singing birds. But I also can appreciate the wind vane.

I am one of few people that I know who will get excited about finding an equisetum. This is the wood equisetum.

This six-spotted tiger beetle distracted me from seeing birds for a moment. But not from hearing them.

Well, I am exhausted and waiting for dinner.

More tomorrow…
