Before getting to birds there are other issues in the US.

The issue gripping the nation these days has to do with the Supreme Court and the potential over-turning of Roe vs. Wade. Let’s hope that they listen to the nation, not just the squeaks-wheel religious extremists on the right.

I’m not a fan of cases/deaths per 100,000 people, as the people involved are not a statistic. That aside it’s clear that SARS-CoV-2 Omicron B2.12.1 is on the rise.

What is clear is that on a weekly basis the US will soon once again be leading the world in new cases. Get boosted and mask when necessary, especially by plane.
Now, on to the day at Whitefish Point.

At least for now it’s really spring at Whitefish Point.

I took a photo this morning of the shadow of me in the “Raptor Roost.”

A couple of Turkey Vultures in a nearby tree reminded be to keep moving and not be tempted to nap on the deck.

Being able to photograph a Ruffed Grouse between the cabin and the Point meant that I had finally photographed all three of Michigan’s grouse this year. In fact I have now photographed 160 bird species this year in the eastern U.S.

This Rudy-crowned Kinglet was very accommodating let us approach closely and get photos.

But the bird of the day was this Long-eared Owl at the Point this morning.
Now the hawks – Once again there was well over 1,000 Broad-winged Hawks and a surprising number of Golden Eagles. So, it was a great day for bird-watchers.
More tomorrow…
