A cold, but sunny and ultimately busy day at Whitefish Point

Starting tomorrow the weather will be improving for a good raptor flight. If you can get to the Point this weekend I would suggest that you do.

Today started out with a fresh dusting of snow. By mid-day it had either blown away or melted.

We are fortunate in that we see Merlins every day. This one was hunting passerines on the beach.

For the past few days migrants have been appearing in decent numbers. This is one of a group of seven Hermit Thrushes along Whitefish Point Road.

Our first Eastern Phoebe of the season.

Looking at cars in the parking lot at the Point allows us to see which states and provinces people are from. Additionally, there are interesting license plates and stickers to see.

The north wind was leading to large waves on Lake Superior.

The wind also leads to interesting patterns in the sand.

Susan found this moth (The Infant) a diurnal moth found around birches and aspens.

Here’s the upper surface of the hind wings which is orange and black.

More tomorrow…
