The current situation with the pandemic. The driving force in the increase in numbers worldwide is the Omicron BA.2 variant. Fortunately, while it is easily transmissible the course of the infection is much more mild in people who are vaccinated. Now, on to nature.

I’m ready for plants and fungi to start appearing in southern Michigan. Black witches butter is a common fungus that I should be finding now. The weather, however isn’t cooperating.

One of the first plants to flower in the spring is Harbinger-of-spring. We looked for these a few days ago, without success. Hopefully, we can find some before we hed north to Whitefish Point.

A favorite part of being at Whitefish Point is finding both common and unusual animals, such as this flying squirrel.

We will be seeing redpolls at our feeders, and Red Crossbills should be nesting soon.

But what I am really looking forward to is hawk and owl migration. Golden Eagles are always a predictable treat. But that’s next week. We still have some time to see plants and “southern” treats.
More tomorrow…
