A visit to the Huron River

We spent the afternoon at Dexter-Huron Metropark west of Ann Arbor. We were searching for early spring wild flowers, but had to settle for mostly insects.

Midges and stoneflies dominated what we saw.

This stonefly (Plecoptera) was particularly abundant (waiting for identification) and the largest of what we saw.

My favorite midge with feathery antennae.

Another stonefly.

Then we had an interesting little caterpillar, that I would probably call an inchworm.

A mating pair of stoneflies. The female has very small wings, while the male had large wings.

As we were leaving I spotted log at the edge of the woods with this Northern Cinnabar Polypore, an interesting fungus.

More later…
