Spring, a war, a virus and writing

Spring is here. Stay positive and remember it’s not summer. Hot and cold, rain and snow, sun and more daylight. For me, I am looking forward to bird migration and the appearance of wildflowers and insects. But I am also aware that we are still seeing the tremendous problems that the world is experiencing.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is continuing with less success that Putin was expecting. At the same time the Ukrainian people are experiencing terrible circumstances and will face even worse, regardless of what the world wants. How this will all play out we cannot predict. The best case scenario is that the Russians will relent and leave. The worst case scenario is that we will see another world war. In between we will see tactical nuclear weapons used.

At the same time we are watching the invasion of Ukraine we are seeing a resurgence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. To say that this is worse than the situation in Ukraine is almost unthinkable, but in reality it is.

Omicron BA.2 is ravaging Europe and Asia. It will reach North America and we will see a fifth wave of the virus.

The number of new cases and deaths yesterday (19 March) shows how the virus is hitting Europe and Asia.

The situation over the last week shows even more disturbing numbers supporting the new wave washing over Eurasia.

Now on to writing. Everybody thinks that once a writer publishes his/her first piece that rest becomes easy. That hasn’t been my experience. Writing is just like any job, it’s work. If you don’t put in the time and effort nothing gets published.

All writers want to be brilliant, amazing, unsurpassed, but most of us are satisfied with “there’s a check.” Yep, it’s like any other job.

My cousin David posted this, and it really struck a chord with me. Good writing should be succinct and too the point, and at the same time holding the attention of the reader.

Unfortunately, most new (or naive) writers are like Snoopy. But few will ever experience this. But I can say from experience that it is a lot of fun.
