On this beautiful winter day I have been looking at some drawings that I did last spring. I was drawing the spring ephemerals as I has seen them. Here are a few violets. I’m thinking of redoing these drawings, but in color.

Long-spurred violet is perhaps my favorite violet to find in the spring. We often head out to Nan Weston in western Washtenaw County where these and perhaps five other violet species are found.

Birds are starting to appear as February transitions into March. Here are two males feeding on refilled feeders. The left bird is a Red-winged Blackbird, the right bird is a Brown-headed Cowbird.

As we reach the end of winter, we are also approaching easing of restrictions with regards to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic (Covid-19). Case numbers in the USA are down, and are worst among the unvaccinated. I find it disturbing to see that Russia is currently experiencing very high numbers of new cases and deaths. With their massive invasion of the Ukraine we have to wonder how this will prolong the pandemic as we are now into the early days of the third year of this.
