We care “a whole awful lot,” which is why we visit so many wild areas. Today the search for plant and animal diversity took us to the Savannah Wildlife Refuge. The main driving trail was closed for work. So, we found another spot with extensive hiking trails. And this is what we ended up with –

The Kingfisher Trail loops around this small lake.

Finding Oak mistletoe growing in larger oak trees is always a treat.

The only ducks on the small lake were Ring-necked Ducks.

We found a Hermit Thrush close to where we parked. The bird politely allowed us to watch it from the front and back.

Resurrection fern is always fun finding in the trees.

There were several American alligators at the edges of the lake.

Spanish moss, an iconic plant for the south is neither Spanish nor a moss. This is actually a small plant!

And lastly a lichen, Usnea cornuta. This one of my favorite southern lichens. I am sure that in the next week we will find several other favorites.
More tomorrow.
