Looking for waxwings

We started the day with breakfast at Frank’s Place. Then it was off to search for birds.

If you look under the left feeder you can see the tail of a cardinal. There was a male and female cardinal at these feeders, but never when I was taking pictures. Cardinals are not typical in the U.P. so this was a fun discovery. We had stopped for fruiting trees, but as would be our luck today – no waxwings.

On for a final look at the hawk-owl, and being able to say that we saw a cardinal and hawk-owl in the same day!

After traveling many back roads, we stopped for lunch at Pure Country in Rudyard. Still a nice place for a meal after being in the cold. From here we went to the Dafter Landfill to search for gulls.

We found an Iceland Gull sitting with the Herring Gulls not far from a Glaucous Gull.

This made comparing the three a fun experience. There was also a Great Black-backed Gull that flew off before I was able to get a photo. There were easily over a thousand gulls, with a least three more Glaucous Gulls.

We ended the day a Moloney’s in the Soo for dinner. A nice trip. Lots of nice northern birds, good meals and fun with a good friend.

More later…
